UK Countryside Review 2012 - The Old Horns Inn (Bradfield) - Pub Of The Year 2012

Its "Pub of the year" time 2012.

I have visited many places in 2012, and still find it hard to beat this place ....

I always enjoy a meal at the Old Horns Inn at Bradfield.
Any time of year, you will find this place just feels like the right place to be.

Friendly staff, lovely food, great surroundings and great value for money.  What more do you need !!

Even during the day (midweek), you can get 2 meals for £5, and the food does not lack on quality, even when there is a special offer on.

On Sunday, you can still order from the main menu, or visit the Carvery, which is excellent value and perfect for those that want to experience a genuine Yorkshire sunday lunch.  Its rather tasty.

If you would like to visit their own Website and Twitter page, you will be able to book and reserve your table.  Highly recommended.

10/10 *****

I am really looking forward to the Christmas menu.

Peak District Photo Album 2012

Peak District Photos from 2012 FREE PICTURES This photo album contains a great mini slideshow of the Peak District and its glorious countryside

Winter in the Peak District 2012

We all know that the festive season can be a beautiful time in the Peak District in Derbyshire in the UK.

Please do take care if the temperature goes below 6 Degrees, icy roads can catch you out, and in rural areas, you run more risk of coming across ice if it starts to get cold, and it is cold at the moment out there.

If you do have to travel in cold conditions, please carry a survival pack ... food, drink, blankets, hot drink etc.  If you keep prepared, then you will have a lovely time and will be able to enjoy cosy meals in cosy countryside pubs over the festive season.

You are welcome to send in your own festive pictures if you like, please let me know if you wish to send in your pictures :)  I will try to post my own new pictures of the Peak District really soon.

Ladybower Summer 2012

This was a perfect day :)

Taken at the Ladybower Resevoir in the Summer of 2012.

This year, the government did issue a hosepipe ban, which was lifted shortly afterwards due to the heavy rain that followed.

Lets hope the Summer of 2013 is a sunny one :)

Sheffield Evening Skyline

If peace and tranquility is not for you, then the city of Sheffield will have plenty to offer.
Casino's, Cinemas, Restaurants, Clubs, Theatres, Hotels ... its all there ... and more.

Sheffield is based in the North of the UK and is near to Meadowhall shopping centre.
Sheffield is knowns for its participation in the Steel industry, and Sheffield steel is still highly regarded as being the best quality steel.

Sheffield has 2 of the best Universities in the UK, and has a wide selection of shops in the city centre, in local surrounding areas, at Meadowhall and at various other shopping complexes to cater for everyone.

The sports facilities in Sheffield are World class.  We have Olympic gold medalists here :)

UK Snooker legends grace the Crucible each year.

The city centre does also host craft and food fairs during December.  Well worth a visit, but its best to check your information first, so you can book your hotel with plenty of time to spare.  Who needs New York .... ?

You can get to Sheffield if you head North up the M1 from the direction of London, Milton Keynes, Northampton, Nottingham, Derby and you will see Sheffield signposted.

If you are heading South from Newcastle Upon Tyne, then head past Leeds and Bradford down the M1 right to Sheffield.

Sheffield has a vibrant creative scene, and boasts several music studios and talented artists.  Sheffield has a strong creative culture, and you will find many people who study and appreciate art and creative meadia such as film.  Sheffield has several Art Galleries and plenty of inspiration to create art.

Sheffield has a wide range of cultures, and the many shops and restaurants in Sheffield would make anyone feel at home, from any part of the world.

There are even plenty of lovely parks in Sheffield if you want to relax, and there may be a nice change for the kids in store at one of the parks in Sheffield.

I will post a review later about the parks which are open to the public in Sheffield, list any events that you may be interested in attending and also list suggestions for fun days out throughout the year.

Sheffield does even have 24 hour supermarkets, so if you have a car, and need urgent food and drinks, you will have no problems with last minute shopping trips.

Don't worry if you have not got a car, Sheffield caters for Students travelling by Bus and Tram, and there are plenty of shops open until late fairly near to where you may live or stay.

Or you could order a Taxi ... Sheffield has plenty of "Black Cab" taxis.  They are similar to London taxis.
Getting around should be pretty easy.

Sheffield people are friendly, and there are really good times to be had.

I hope you are loving the blog so far, any comments would be welcome :)

Fox House Sunset 2012

As the sun sets over the hills of the Peaks, nature sleeps ready for a new day.

More to be discovered tomorrow :)

A Peak District natural water feature ....

Here is a beautiful "water feature" which is a natural stream which runs from a mystery location in the Peak District in Derbyshire, UK.  I thought I would share this with you as I came upon this whilst discovering the wonderful countryside between Bakewell and Fox House.

Bradfield Wildlife. Cows :)

Here are some of the friendly resident cows of Bradfield that decided to come and say hello to me on my travels.  The locals are just as friendly too :)

Bradfield is so quiet and peaceful.  With stunning scenery and wildlife everywhere you look, Bradfield is well worth a visit :)

The Cricket green in the centre of Bradfield has lots of space for children to play safely, seats to watch the local Cricket team, a Bowling green, Tennis Courts, and the beautiful natural stream across the road even has a few ducks that you can feed !

There is also a church at the top of the hill, and the breathtaking views of Bradfield can be fully appreciated if you venture up to the top of the hill towards the church.

Bradfield is the ideal place for people who want to visit a beautiful village with rustic genuine charm.  You can grab a local ice cream if you have room after your cosy pub meal.  The homemade food and local produce will make you feel right at home.  Everything at Bradfield has that feel good factor about it.

A visit to Bradfield is truly one where you can relax and unwind in a traditional village atmosphere, and is a place to have a break from noisy gadgets and enjoy family life in a peaceful and beautiful countryside setting.

Bradfield is a great place to take good friends and treat them to the finer side of life.

Bradfield is not a hotspot for mobile devices such as mobile phones, you probably will not get a reception signal at all, but then why would you need to use your mobile ?

Your Sat Nav should be fine though and will get you to your destination if you have the right postcode :)

Bradfield is my personal "Village of the Decade" and will find it hard to find a contender to beat it.
Bradfield is probably one of the most unspoiled places in the UK and surely is worth more than one visit.

The most surprising thing is that the location of Bradfield is only 20 minutes drive from Sheffield, which is a major UK city.  Bradfield is also within easy reach by car from Barnsley, Rotherham and Chesterfield.

Sheffield is based about 1 and 20 minutes from Manchester.  You can travel from Sheffield to Manchester by car on the "Snake Pass" or "Woodhead Pass".

Both routes have stunning views, but please travel via the "Woodhead Pass" if possible if travelling to Sheffield from Manchester at night by Car.

The "Snake Pass" and its winding roads are a challenge at night for even the most competant driver.

The "UK Countryside Review for Pub Of The Year 2012" is coming soon ....
Is the winning pub based in Bradfield ... ?  ... Possibly :)

National Trust Peak District National Park Website Twitter and Blogspot

The Peak District is an area of countryside which has some of the most beautiful countryside views in the world, and is located in the middle of some major northern cities and towns.

The Peak District is located in Derbyshire, which is located in the north of England, very close to Sheffield and near to Manchester, Derby and Chesterfield.  The Peak District is usually within an hours drive from the nearby cities and towns, but maintains a constant peace and tranquility.

The National Trust in the Peak District is managing the beautiful and dramatic landscape that you see today in the Peak District, and this takes an enormous amount of time, devotion and resource. Their dedicated team of staff and volunteers strive to maintain the fabric of this beautiful landscape by carrying out a variety of essential tasks which include rebuilding dry stone walls, installing new accessible stiles and gates and thinning the native woodlands that have been planted over the last century.

The Peak District covers a vast area of outstanding natural beauty, and the National Trust works hard to maintain this.  The visitors who enjoy walking in the Peak District also have a mutual respect for the glorious landscape, and you will find the local people are very friendly if you respect the beautiful landscape.

There are many things to do in the Peak District, walking, cycling and climbing being the most practiced outdoor pursuits in this area.

There are also plenty of activities that will help you to unwind and rest, and still so many places to visit and plenty of things to do too for those who don't want to totally relax.

In the Peak District village of Hathersage, there is an open air swimming pool which is open during the summer months, and this has got to be one of the finest outdoor swimming experiences ever, and great not just for kids but for all ages.  Its good if you can swim as its pretty deep.  The swimming pool is heated, and you get to see 360 degree countryside views while you swim.  I will post a review in April or May 2013, with the latest upto date information on parking, entrance fee's etc.

Below is a photo of the hills of Castleton in the summer months.  This is another photo that I would like to share with you all.  There are views like this and many more tucked away in vast rolling hills and valleys within the Peak District in Derbyshire, and we hope that you will visit this special part of the UK soon.

From Bradfield to Bakewell, from Buxton to Bamford, from Hope to Hathersage and beyond, if you appreciate the countryside in its natural splendor, if you love to discover new landscapes, if you love to breathe in clean air, and if you have never visited this part of the UK before, I advise strongly that you pay a visit to this part of the world as soon as possible.  You won't regret it :)

All that is asked of all visitors who visit the countryside for a picnic is to take any rubbish home with you, so you leave your surroundings as you found them, litter free and beautiful.

There are plenty of cosy pubs tucked away in various parts of the Peaks that are open in the Winter, serving the best traditional home cooked food, quality seasonal vegetables, and using the finest selection of local meat sources.  As fresh and fine as you can get.  Great for those Autumn and Winter walks.

In the summer, the glorious warm sunshine allows you to enjoy the best of the outdoors, with the choice of taking a picnic or grabbing a light pub lunch. Pretty streams and plenty of walks to discover, hills to climb, rock faces to climb and lots of open spaces with a variety of wildlife make this a perfect place to spend time with your family, loved ones and special friends.

You can visit the Peak District at any time of the year.  Most pubs in the Peaks serve food all year round that cannot be faulted, and you may be tempted to try something different :)

It is really easy to get to the Peak District by Car, Bus and Train.  You can also hire cycles too :)

There are plenty of Pubs, Restaurants, Hotels and Cottages scattered amongst the hills of the Peaks to discover and wake up in.  And plenty of real open fires to discover too (some pubs have a real fireplace that works) and that adds to the genuine cosy atmosphere of the real thing.

I highly advise that you visit this beautiful part of the UK if you love to see stunning scenery.

Some Harry Potter scenes were filmed in the Peak District :)

The Peak District welcomes all visitors that respect the countryside and leaves the land how they found it.
